18 Mar Denouncing Attacks on Asian Americans

Posted at 19:37h in Home, Racial Violence by Sayara International

Sayara International condemns the recent attacks on Asian Americans in Georgia. Our thoughts are with those close to the victims and the whole AAPI community. The rise in hate crimes and violent extremist attacks and killings targeting the AAPI community across the United States is an alarming development. These actions have increased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding yet further trauma for Asian Americans during an already difficult time. As an organization devoted to reducing violence against vulnerable peoples around the world, Sayara has monitored the root causes of racial violence. We have studied the clear linkages between the normalization of hate speech and the increase of violence against the targets of that speech. Words matter, especially words from our elected leaders, community leaders, and educators in times of uncertainty and polarization. How we discuss COVID-19 is just as important as what we do in response to the pandemic. As we've seen in other environments where vulnerable communities are targeted, women bear the brunt: Asian American women are being targeted twice as often as men. More startling still, attacks against elderly Asian Americans are also on the rise. We add our voices to the multitude of others denouncing these acts of racism, xenophobia, and white supremacy – in whatever form they manifest, verbal or physical.
